Project X - Project X [BLACKLP006]
Label: 2000 Black
West London’s broken beat label 2000 Black unleash another style-shifting set of angular rhythms and fractured beats that defy definition: part jazz, part electro, part cosmic-funk with visits to many stops in between. The brief, rapid-fire ‘S-Kai’ sounds like they hi-jacked Jimmy Smith and Grant Green, and threw some frentic drums over the top, pausing only for brief interludes, the boogie of ‘Grape Juice’ breaks free of the static to unfurl into a hazy fusion number that builds and builds while the swaggering ‘Song For Patrice’ (Rushen) is a killer slice of dancefloor joy. The more leftfield numbers include the machine-gun paced ‘Brave Games’ and the bugged out ‘The Psych’ while ‘The Lost Words’ is an oasis of calm – a chilled, laid back gentle rumba with warm keys and delicate percussion creating a mellowness.
